Coues Deer
Bowhunting in the Lower 48

There are five different species of deer as recognized by Pope and Young in North America. The Whitetail Deer is the most heavily hunted animal in North America. There is also the smaller sub-species called the Coues Deer, pronounced "cows". There are also the Mule Deer, Sitka Blacktail Deer, and the Columbia Blacktail Deer. P&Y minimums for the 5 species start with Coues Deer at 65, Sitka Blacktail at 75, Columbia Blacktail at 90, Whitetail at 125, and the Mule Deer at 145.

Coues Deer:
While few bowhunters think about pursuing coues deer, those who have quickly get the bug to continue to hunt the "gray ghosts". Hunts are conducted in December, January, and February. BSC has outfitters in New Mexico and Mexico that we recommend. Hunts range from $3000 - $3500.
