Bowhunting in South Africa

This country was the first to begin to see the need for bowhunting regulations. Legal bowhunting started in the Transvaal province in 1984 with the last of the original four provinces, Natal, coming on board in 1986. In 1993 the final rules were amended so that there are no animals prohibited from hunting with archery equipment. There are, however, specific rules and certifications necessary for the bowhunting of dangerous game. (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant) Certification for bowhunting these animals can be obtained by contacting the NBEF. Equipment restrictions are listed.

South Africa offers perhaps the largest variety of plains game species than any other single African country. Aside from the main stay Impala, warthog, wildebeest, zebra etc. RSA has some specialized species like Mountain Reedbuck, Red Duiker, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest to name a few.  South Africa's hunting is done primarily on game farms.
