Barren Ground Caribou:

The Barren Ground Caribou is one of five species of Caribou found in North America. They are found throughout much of Alaska, and a portion of the Yukon Territory. While there are many different herds of caribou in Alaska, they are all classified as Barren Ground. One of the most well known herds, and the largest is the Mulchatna herd.

Seasons and bag limits, bull and or cow laws vary by game management location, and some Game Management units also require drawings. Caribou do not require non-resident aliens to have a guide, and BSC does offer drop or semi guided hunts, but we don't encourage our clients on such hunts unless they have similar wilderness experiences under their belt. Alaska wilderness can be an unforgiving place if you aren't prepared to deal with it.

The outfitters we have selected offer caribou hunts that are based with initial transportation out of Soldatna, King Salmon, and Aniak. For the most part, your August hunts will find you hunting bachelor groups of bulls, and they are in velvet until early Sept. Hunts in August are usually booked as a week long hunt, and in the areas we recommend, it is a two bull limit, and black bear are also in season.. The September hunts are often done in combination with moose hunts, or combination moose / caribou / grizzly or brown bear hunts can also be arranged.

The Barren Ground caribou are generally the largest caribou of the five species from the scoring perspective. A 325" bull is the minimum for P&Y and there are many bulls in the book over 400. Caribou hunting in Alaska is truly an awesome adventure and affordable way to hunt the last Frontier. The weather can always be a factor, but under normal circumstances, it is a high success rate hunt in some of the most scenic wilderness country in North America.
