Bowhunting Moose in Alaska

The largest of the three classifications, the bulls can grow as large as a ton, but 1500 lbs. is a huge bull. Antler spreads can exceed 70 inches. Bowhunts for moose are most productive during the pre-rut and rut phase where the bulls can be called to the bowhunter. Every area is a little different, but in Alaska, mid-September usually is the peak of rut. Earlier in Sept. can also be great bowhunting as the moose are in the pre-rut phase. These moose bowhunts can be a single species bowhunt, or in combination with caribou, grizzly, black bear, brown bear etc. In Alaska, you are allowed to bowhunt moose without a guide, but be prepared to do a lot work if you are successful.

General description of moose

Moose are divided into three categories in North America according to the Pope and Young club. They are the largest member of the deer family in North America, and have a wide geographical range from NFLD on the east coast, to Alaska on the farthest point west, covering all of Canada. There are also moose in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Washington and Wyoming. For BSC clients, 99% of our moose hunts are geared toward the Canadian Providence's and Alaska.

The three categories of moose are Alaska Yukon Moose (all moose taken in Alaska, Yukon Territory and NWT's), the Canadian Moose (all moose taken in Canada outside Yukon, NWT's, as well as moose taken in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota) and the Shiras Moose (moose taken in Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Washington.)

P & Y minimum scores for the Alaskan - Yukon moose is 170, Canadian moose - 135, and the Shiras or Wyoming moose is 125. Some moose in portions of British Columbia are recognized as Shiras moose by other record book keeping organizations, but not Pope and Young.
